Hamster is a solitary rodent; that likes to live in isolation in the wild. It is a burrowing animal that is native to Europe and North Asia. These little rodents are now popularly being kept as pets. These animals are extremely calm and rarely get aggressive so are good with children too. The reason for the popularity of these animals is their easy maintenance, disease resistance, and odorless living.

Hamsters are distinguishable from other small rodents by their little ears, stubby legs, and a short tail. Some species of hamsters like Syrian hamster is also referred to as ‘furballs’ because of their furry coat. Some people get very impulsive in buying these little rodents because one just cannot resist these cute creatures. But many things should be kept in mind before the purchase of a hamster. These animals are very shy in nature and are also very sensitive so they need a lot of care.

Now the question arises which hamster breed should get? If you want to bring home a pet, you must consider a few things first.

1.Research a hamster breed that will fit your lifestyle the best

Five main hamster breeds are popular:

Chinese Hamster: 

They are also known as striped hamsters, they are slightly shy and are solitary animals. They are easy to handle and are easy to maintain. They can have quite aggressive temperaments but despite this trait, if they are good pets. One of their traits is clinging to finger with all four paws. This breed is nocturnal and can display a vicious behavior if kept with other hamsters.

Syrian hamster: 

These are also known as teddy bear hamsters, these are the most popular breed because they are very furry and also good with children. They are also nocturnal. Syrian hamsters are highly territorial animals and must be kept alone when they have matured, Their maturity age is between 8 to 12 weeks. It is one of the most widely kept hamster breeds around the world.

Dwarf Russian Campbell hamster:

 These hamsters are not good with young children because they are very nervous. Despite this fact, these hamsters are a popular pet because adults can handle them easily. They are a bit small and also very quick. They are the relatives of Syrian hamsters.

Roborovski Dwarf Hamster:

The smallest and the faster of all hamsters, they are no bigger than a thumb’s size. They are tiny and active, not necessarily safe for handling. They are nocturnal and good-natured but they do not like to be held so they are not a good option for kids. Due to their agility and small size, these hamster breeds are difficult to handle.

Dwarf Winter White Russian Hamster:

They are the cousins of Dwarf Russian Campbell hamsters, but these are a bit smaller and they bite when they get nervous. They can start breeding at the age of about 4 to 6 months and can produce 4 to 8 pups. It is recommended not to let kids handle them as they may bite if not properly handled.

2. Pick a hamster breed based on physical properties that you like

The size of hamsters ranges from 1 inch to 7 inches. Smaller breeds like dwarf hamster might not be suitable for children, while bigger breeds like Syrian hamsters are very excellent with young children. Hamsters come in a wide variety, and some have short hair while some have long. Syrian hamsters are called fancy hamsters because of their long furry coat. Hamsters come in different colors, for example, dwarf hamsters come in a beautiful white or gray color. While Syrian or teddy hamsters come in an intriguing golden color.

3.Understanding gender

Female hamsters can be very aggressive and difficult to handle, so if you want to keep a single hamster then you can buy either the gender, but if you plan on colonizing then preferably, same sex should be held together. For beginners, it is not advisable to keep a pair together because vicious disputes could erupt between them.
